Welcome to the 2007 - 2008 Season
Thank you on behalf of everyone involved in organising the Croome and West Warwickshire for your valued support last season. Subscriptions came in promptly and willingly which helps the cash flow enormously. We had a good response to the new membership initiative for the Countryside Alliance and really felt everyone was pulling together to help their hunt.
We continue to hunt legally using exemptions within the Hunting Act. We had a team of Masters who worked hard on your behalf to provide entertainment and sport whilst never forgetting the needs of our friends, the farmers and landowners who support us through these difficult times. Our eagle Boss has matured and learnt his job and his handlers, Peter, Ian and George have enjoyed working with him. We are lucky that he has a good temprement and is adaptable. Peter, our huntsman has shown good sport and crosses the country very well with all his horses. We bought a new horse, Joey who has proved to be very capable and of course, Jane has continued to produce the hunt horses always looking fit and immaculately turned out. Peter is a good hound man and he was upset when we lost almost a month's hunting in January to kennel cough, however hounds recovered more quickly than some packs and were soon flying again.
We look forward to welcoming you all in the new season and remember that we all have a part to play in keeping our hunt flourishing.
Hunt History
Hounds were kept at Croome from 1600 to 1719 and again from 1738 till 1843, when they were given up during the minority of the 9th Earl of Coventry. Lord Coventry PC (9th Earl) founded the hunt (known by his name till 1882) in the year of 1874. It has existed in its present form since he took over the country. In 1899 the Hon HT Coventry and GD Smith purchased the hounds from Mr Wrangham. The pack was purchased by successive Masters and was their private property until 1926, when the country subscribed a sufficient sum of money to acquire a new pack. The West Warwickshire Farmers Hunt joined with the Croome Hunt to hunt the Croome country and the country loaned from the Warwickshire and the North Warwickshire in season 1973-74.
Hunt Country
The country which lies in Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, is about 20 miles square.
Best vale country centres on Peopleton. There are several very sporting estates in the country including Ragley, Madresfield, Spetchley, Croome, Severnend and Overbury. The country spans both sides of the river Severn with wooded country to the west of the river.
